Topic: Louisiana Purchase/Lewis and Clark Expedition Point of View: A member of the expedition Today is September 26th of 1804. You may be wondering who I am. I'm part of the Corps of Discovery on the expedition along the Louisiana Territory, lead by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. Today was a long day. We were on our keelboats going along the Niobrara River when a mass of Lakota Sioux Indians stopped us, demanding that one of our keelboats be taken from them as a price for moving up the river. They spoke in a language unheard of to any of our men, it didn't sound anything like English or French. We ran into problems talking and communicating with the Indians, but eventually one of the interpreters were able to make something out of it. Later on, we invited the Indian tribes' chiefs onto the keelboats with us and had a really fun time, there was tons of whiskey to go around and we danced. I asked Captain Lewis where we would be heading next after the little party we had with the Indians and he said "We shall be traveling up west the Niobrara River even more, then after that, we will encounter the Grand River, and from there, we will decide". |
