The Mexican-American War started on April 25th, 1846, and ended when it with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848. The Mexican-American War had a main cause, that the Texans were saying their border was at the Rio Grande, while the Mexicans disagreed, saying that the border was hundreds of miles over. The Mexican-American War officially started when Mexican soldiers fired on Rio Grande, also known as the Battle of Palo Alto, over disputes on the border. The Mexican cavalry attacked the U.S. Soldiers at the border, killing about a dozen soldiers. Following this attack, President James K. Polk along with the Congress officially declared war on Mexico. The major battles of the war were: The Battle of Palo Alto (May 8th, 1846), The Battle of Resaca de la Palma (May 9th, 1846), The Battle of Monterrey (September 21st-24th, 1846), The Battle of Buena Vista (February 22nd-23rd, 1847), The Siege of Veracruz (March 9th-29th, 1847), The Battle of Cerro Gordo (April 17-18th, 1847), The Battle of Contreras (August 20th, 1847), The Battle of Churubusco (August 20th, 1847), The Battle of Molino del Rey (September 8th, 1847), and The Battle of Chapultepec (September 12-13th, 1847). In September of 1847, during the Battle of Chapultepec, the American troops, even though they were outnumbered by the Mexican troops, were able to pull through and capture the capital of Mexico, none-other-than, Mexico City itself. Later on, in the year 1848, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was established and signed, ending the war, and giving America the territory of: present-day California, Nevada, Utah, parts of Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Wyoming, Texas, and the area around the border. In return, America gave Mexico 15 million dollars. The Mexican-American war transformed the nation as it established us as a strong nation to not only Britain, but now Mexico, and also expanded our nation even further West, to which soon we would expand to the full-present-day United States of America. **See sources cited on Citations page.** The above video is a quick history of the Mexican-American war, followed by doodles.
